A Dutch researcher has created a virus with the potential to kill half of the planet’s population. Now, researchers and experts in bioterrorism debate whether it is a good idea to publish the virus creation ”recipe”. However, several voices argue that such research should have not happened in the first place.

The virus is a strain of avian influenza H5N1 genetically modified to be extremely contagious. It was created by researcher Ron Fouchier of the Erasmus Medical Center Rotterdam, Netherlands. The work was first presented at a conference dedicated to influenza, that took place in September in Malta.

Many scientists are concerned about possible negative consequences that could precede the publication of this research. There are many fears regarding bioterrorists that might find useful tips or a whole ’recipe’ to plan biological attacks. Demands are beeing made for the establishment of an international institution to oversee such dangerous research projects.

Wasps take shelter in zombie ladybugs

This sordid tale isn’t fiction for many ladybugs that fall victim to the parasitical wasp Dinocampus coccinellae. Now, a new study reveals why the wasps use ladybugs as incubators. It turns out that the zombie ladybugs keep predators away from the wasps’ vulnerable larva, increasing the likelihood that they survive to become full-fledged wasps. 

The research in the journal Biology Letters, finds that this protection comes at a cost: Larva that cocoon themselves to a living ladybug, as opposed to a dead one or to none at all, can expect fewer eggs of their own when they emerge as wasps. This suggests that the same resources the wasps use to develop their eggs are also used to control the zombie ladybug.

Scientists said in a new study that sex can actually wipe someone’s memory.

Researchers cite a case of a 54-year-old women who arrived at a hospital in Washington DC who had just been intimate with her husband and then lost all recollection of the past 24 hours.

The team said this condition is known as “transient global amnesia” which is temporary.

“We don’t know very much about the cause. It causes a lot of alarm, but this is not a stroke or an event that causes damage to the brain. It’s almost always very benign,” Sebastian Ameriso, from the Institute for Neurological Research in Buenos Aires, told Livescience.

Very little is known about what triggers the condition, but some doctors believe that misfiring valves in the neck may be the cause.

These valves remain open, instead of closing shut.  This allows pressure in the stomach to push oxygen-poor blood that should be seeping downwards to the heart, back up through the jugular veins and in to the part of the brain that control memories.

The condition affects just one of three to five people per 100,000 a year.  In the majority of the cases, it takes just a few hours for the memory to return. 

One case of transient global amnesia in 1964 caused a man to lose his memory the moment he orgasmed during sex, causing him to exclaim “Where am I? What’s happened?”
